![]() ![]() The only way you can do this is by fighting Nephren-Ka, which makes the dialogue option via the language book not just pointless but misleading (there is nothing- up to that point and even after- that suggests that you have to fight him if you don't want to miss a critical quest item). However, what you don't know is that you have to obtain Nephren-Ka's Shroud, to complete the final battle with Nyarlathotep. You get the information you are seeking, about the Old Ones, and are automatically sent back to the Strange Place. By giving you the Egyptian language book and dialogue options to pose as a follower of Nephren-Ka, you are led to believe that you can talk your way through the encounter. In the case of bosses, this meant combat.Ĭase in point: the Nepren-Ka storyline. Whatever dialogue options you chose, you always ended up with the same result. The fact that there really were no meaningful choices, in the minimal interactions you had with other characters, reinforces this impression. In that sense, it reminded me a lot of the first Diablo. In the end, the story felt like more of a framework on which to hang a rogue-like, action-based dungeon crawler, rather than the main asset of the game. It did not help that the English translation of the game was barely passable, making the less than coherent storyline even more incomprehensible. Even though I did have such familiarity, there were still times that I had to consult the Lovecraft wiki. Again, if you had no prior knowledge of the various places or characters referenced, you could easily get lost. characters would sometimes mention names or proceed to certain areas with no preceding explanation of who those individuals were or what the significance of certain places were. ![]() There also appeared to be gaps in the narrative- e.g. ![]() While there were attempts to create an interesting story, I found that, unless you had familiarity with the larger Lovecraftian mythos (and not just the works authored by Lovecraft himself), this part of the game was difficult to appreciate. So I finally defeated all the Old Ones and can now render my full opinion of the game. ![]()
